Managing Officer Behavior: Policies and Liability
This timely and important one-day seminar is a joint offering of the W.W. Caruth Jr. Police Institute at Dallas, and the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration
This one-day seminar will provide an in-depth understanding of the Title 42, U.S. Code,Section 1983 and the related potential liability confronting police officers and their supervisory agents. Further, this session will explore major United States Supreme Court decisions that help guide officer behavior, and will frame some of the most critical issues that challenge contemporary police professionals. Having built that legal foundation, discussion will focus upon policy development relating to high-risk and high-liability issues: specifically, the use of force (including conducted electronic devises - CED’s - Tasers), the use of deadly force, and emergency and pursuit driving. The seminar will conclude with an examination of the accountability systems that track officer behavior, both by developing early intervention systems and internal investigations, and identification of measures that help prevent liability exposure for police officers and organizations.
